this section still needs to be written…
But on WhatIIIF? 2023 in Rotterdam, SPACE will be our subject!
An opportunity to bring this section alive from the concrete research-interests of the participating improvisers!
Reading through all proposals and research obsessions, there transpires at least a subdivision of talking about space in these three categories (which are of course interlaced in reality, and probably there are more categories to add):
SPACE as an expressive MATERIAL
e.g.:
– physical space (the actual, tangible space you are in, the relationship with other ‘bodies’ in space)
– visual space (how is space treated and organised visually?)
– audio space (how is the listening space organised, and how to deal with space there?)
– …
e.g.:
– imaginary spaces
– inner, bodily spaces
– …
SPACE as a RELATIONAL (or social) EXPERIENCE
e.g.:
– public spaces / performance spaces (i.e. the relationship with audience, and how that is organised by space)
– types of communal spaces that are created or facilitated
– the space you are given or you take (for action, interaction, in a social sense)
– …
Just as a first proposal…
How could the thoughts about SPACE further become part of this Knowledge Base in a meaningful way?
What are the essential/helpful things to describe about the ways we can work with ‘space’ in improvisation?
